Kaz von Löwenhof: Sabah’s Rising Cosplay Star Shooting for the Big Leagues
January 23, 2025
When you think of Malaysian cosplayers who have truly made their mark, think Kaz von Löwenhof. From Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Kaz isn’t just your average cosplayer—she’s the real deal. Her journey began way back in 2008, where she first stumbled into the world of cosplay, back when DeviantArt was the go-to site for all things creative.
From Inspiration to Action
Seeing all those jaw-dropping costumes from global cosplayers lit a spark in her. But it wasn’t until 2013 that she decided to take things seriously. Inspired by the legendary Japanese cosplayer Reika, Kaz taught herself how to sew. It wasn’t easy, but that didn’t stop her.
“I saw how Reika created these incredible costumes from scratch, and it hit me—I want to do that too. I wanted to make something with my own hands, something that showed my personality,” she says.
By 2015, she was stepping onto competition stages, rocking her self-made costumes and delivering performances that wowed the crowd. The effort paid off—she’s now bagged 31 awards from competitions in Kota Kinabalu, Miri, and Kuala Lumpur.
A Cosplayer With Many Hats (And Languages)
But Kaz isn’t just about cosplay. This girl’s got range. She’s fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia (Sabahan dialect, of course), Mandarin, Scots (Glaswegian dialect), and even Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig). How cool is that? This isn’t just random—it ties into her passion for Classical English Literature and her admiration for British actors like David Tennant, Michael Sheen, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Thanks to them, she’s gotten into stage acting and dived deep into classics like Hamlet, Macbeth, and Edward II. “These plays taught me how to bring characters to life,” Kaz explains. “It’s about connecting with people emotionally, and that’s something I use in my cosplay performances.”
That proud moment came in 2020 when her Alucard cosplay from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night got featured as a Daily Deviation on DeviantArt. That recognition was a big deal for her, but it’s not just about personal milestones.
Kaz is also part of KKCauseplay, a group of cosplayers who use their talents to support charity work. For her, cosplay isn’t just about competing—it’s about creating something meaningful and giving back. “Cosplay taught me so much about myself,” she says.
The Road to World Cosplay Summit 2027
Kaz is gearing up for World Cosplay Summit (WCS) 2027, and it’s shaping up to be the biggest moment of her cosplay journey so far. She’s already sketching costume designs, and knowing her, they’re going to be insanely detailed and well thought out.
She’s also planning a stage performance that’s bound to leave everyone in awe. It’s classic Kaz—she never does anything halfway. Everything she puts her energy into, she gives it her all, and this is no exception.
“This isn’t just another competition for me,” she says, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “I want to bring something that truly represents Malaysia, something that shows the world just how creative we can be.”
For Kaz, it’s not just about looking amazing—it’s about telling a story. She’s pulling inspiration from everything she loves: literature, theater, and, of course, her years of experience in cosplay. Every little thing she’s doing shows just how much this means to her, from the intricate details in her costume designs to the passion she’s pouring into crafting her stage performance.
Why Kaz Stands Out
It’s not just the insane amount of effort Kaz puts into every single costume that makes her stand out—though seriously, the level of detail she achieves is mind-blowing. It’s also the way she connects with people.
She’s fluent in so many languages, and she can bridge gaps that most of us wouldn’t even know how to cross. And then there’s her work with cosplay charity—it’s not just about her passion for cosplay; it’s about using that passion to give back and make a difference.
She’s the kind of person who inspires everyone around her to do better, to be better.
A Core Member of WCS Malaysia Alliance Partner
Kaz is also a core member of the World Cosplay Summit Malaysia Alliance Partner (WCSMAP), a dedicated community work group that supports aspiring cosplay performing arts enthusiasts.
This group is all about helping individuals and teams refine their craft and creating the best possible experience for participants in the WCS Malaysia competition.
As the liaison officer for Borneo Island, Kaz has been instrumental in mentoring local talents, providing guidance, and building a supportive cosplay community. Her influence goes far beyond her own performances—she’s paving the way for others to shine on the big stage too.
With her eyes locked on WCS 2027, it’s clear Kaz von Löwenhof is ready to take her craft, her passion, and her community to the next level. If you’re into cosplay—or just love seeing someone chase their dreams—keep an eye on her. The next few years are going to be nothing short of amazing.
