Project Unite Cosplay – A Movement for Cosplayers, By Cosplayers
Project Unite Cosplay is a community-driven awareness campaign spearheaded by the World Cosplay Summit Malaysia Alliance Partners (WCSMAP) and was mooted during the WCSMY Summit 2025. This initiative was created to unite, inspire, and protect cosplayers by addressing the growing issues of hate, discrimination, gatekeeping, narcissistic attacks, and elitism that have negatively impacted the cosplay community. Cosplay should be a space of creativity, passion, and self-expression, but harmful behaviors have created barriers that make many feel excluded or judged. Project Unite aims to break these barriers and reclaim cosplay as an inclusive space for all.
Our Vision
We envision a cosplay community built on inclusivity, respect, and celebration, where creativity knows no limits and every individual—regardless of race, gender, skill level, or background—can express themselves freely and confidently. We strive to eliminate discrimination, gatekeeping, and elitism, ensuring that cosplay remains a safe and welcoming space. Through collective action, we aim to empower cosplayers, foster a culture of mutual respect, and build a supportive environment where everyone feels valued.
Our Mission
Our mission is to advocate for inclusivity, respect, and safe spaces within the cosplay community by encouraging cosplayers and allies to take a stand against hate, prejudice, gatekeeping, and elitist attitudes. Through pledges, education, advocacy, and partnerships with conventions and community leaders, we actively promote positive interactions, amplify marginalized voices, and drive meaningful change. This isn’t just a campaign; it’s a movement to ensure cosplay remains a space of joy, self-expression, and unity for everyone.
Acceptance in Cosplay
It is time for action. Speak up when you see injustice, call out discrimination, and make sure no one feels unworthy of cosplaying. If you’ve ever been judged, excluded, or told you didn’t belong, this is your chance to regain that power. Make a change. Make it happen. Join the movement. Demand respect. Defend your right to cosplay without fear.
💬 “From body shaming to harassment, discrimination, gateguarding and elistism in cosplay is real. Many cosplayers suffer in silence, afraid to speak out. Project unite is here to change that.”
Imagine a cosplay world where everyone feels safe and welcome.
Get Involved, Be United
You’ve felt it—that hesitation, that moment of doubt before stepping out in cosplay or posting a photo online. What if they judge me? What if I don’t fit in? You’re not alone. Too many cosplayers stay silent, afraid of backlash, afraid of being told they don’t belong. That stops now. Project Unite is here to turn fear into action. No more second-guessing. No more letting gatekeepers define the rules. Cosplay belongs to you, and now, you have a community standing behind you. Take the pledge. Speak out. Wear your cosplay with pride. Fear keeps us isolated. Action brings us together. This is your moment. Step forward. Join the movement.
“Change doesn’t happen on its own. It takes a community to stand together and take action. Whether you’re a cosplayer, a fan, or an ally, your voice matters. Here’s how you can make a difference today!”

10 Pledges to Support #ProjectUniteCosplay
1. Pledge to Encourage, Not Discourage
Instead of tearing people down, offer constructive feedback and encouragement. Help others improve if they ask—but never gatekeep knowledge or make others feel small.
2. Pledge to Stop the Popularity Contest Mentality
Cosplay is about creativity and passion, not clout-chasing. Obsessing over numbers, likes, and engagement can breed toxic competitiveness rather than genuine appreciation.
3. Pledge to Shut Down Bullying and Public Shaming
Laughing at, ridiculing, or making someone feel unworthy because of their appearance, costume quality, or skill level is unacceptable. Cosplay should be a safe space for self-expression.
4. Pledge to Welcome Newcomers Without Judgment
Everyone starts somewhere. Whether someone’s first cosplay is a closet build, a store-bought costume, or a detailed handmade outfit, they belong here just as much as anyone else.
5. Pledge to Lead by Example
The best way to fight toxicity is to be the opposite—kind, inclusive, and encouraging. If you want a better community, help build it by showing respect, patience, and openness to all.
6. Pledge to Call Out Narcissistic Behavior in Cosplay
The cosplay community thrives on shared passion, not self-absorption. No one is more “deserving” of attention than others, and we should uplift everyone, not just ourselves. No more blame-shifting, lies and manipulation.
7. Pledge to Challenge Gatekeeping
No one owns a character, fandom, or cosplay style. Whether someone buys, commissions, or handmakes their costume, they deserve respect and space to enjoy the passion.
8. Pledge to Speak Up Against Elitism
Skill level, years of experience, or popularity shouldn’t dictate respect. Every cosplayer, from beginners to veterans, contributes to the creativity and fun of the community.
9. Pledge to Stand Against Mob Rule and Attacks
Organizing mass harassment, spreading hate campaigns, attacking individuals or events , on-ground or online is never acceptable. No one should be targeted, doxxed, or publicly shamed for their cosplay choices, opinions, or identity. The community should focus on creativity, not tearing people down.
10. Pledge to Support Cosplayers Who Face Harassment
Many cosplayers, especially women and marginalized groups, deal with harassment online and at events. Be an ally by standing up against harmful behavior and supporting victims.
Make Your Voice Heard
Creating an inclusive cosplay community starts with action. Whether you’re a cosplayer or an event organizer, you have the power to make a difference. Cosplayers can take the pledge, speak up, and share their stories to amplify awareness and encourage change. Event organizers can adopt the Safe Cosplay Certification, implement anti-harassment policies, and create inclusive event spaces where everyone feels welcome. Supporting Project Unite means being part of a movement that ensures cosplay remains a place of creativity, passion, and respect. Change doesn’t happen on its own—your voice, your choices, and your actions help shape the future of cosplay. Stand with us. Be the reason someone feels safe, accepted, and inspired to keep cosplaying.

Owning My Passion, My Way
“I started oblivios, but I came back stronger. Cosplaying my favorite character isn’t just about costumes—it’s about resilience, growth, and owning who I am. I put in the effort, pushed past the doubt, and now I wear my passion with pride. Who is to tell me otherwise? This is mine, and I’m here to stay.” – Kevin Tho, Cosplayer

Believing is Achieving
“In my early days, I spent months crafting my costume—poured everything into it. Then the attacks came. ‘Not accurate enough,’ ‘Not the right look.’ I almost let the shame win. Almost stayed home. But I didn’t. I showed up, wore it proudly, and proved one thing—passion survives judgment. No one gets to decide if I belong. I do.” – Salty Katz Sharky, Cosplayer

Strength in Community
“Gatekeeping nearly made me believe I wasn’t a real nobody. But after sharing my story, I found others who had been through the same thing. Now, we support each other and celebrate every cosplay emergencies, big or small.” – Qiqi Hiew, Cosplay Medic
Voices of the Community
Project Unite Cosplay exists because real change starts with real voices. Every shared experience challenges toxic norms, shifts perspectives, and creates a stronger, more inclusive community. When one person speaks up, it encourages others to do the same. It’s not just about recognizing the problem—it’s about taking action and amplifying the stories that push the cosplay scene forward. By listening, supporting, and standing together, we are breaking down barriers and proving that cosplay is for everyone.
