Penang Yosakoi Parade 2026 Is Coming and This Year Is Going to Be Massive
If you have never been to the Penang Yosakoi Parade, 2026 is the year to go. And if you are already a fan, get ready, because this edition is unlike anything the event has staged before.
Happening on 27 and 28 June 2026 at the iconic Esplanade in George Town, the parade is expanding into a full two-day cultural festival called Festival Inspirasi Jepun. A 5-in-1 event packed with Yosakoi dance, cosplay, live music, environmental action, and community charity. Free admission. Two days. One unmissable weekend.

What Is the Penang Yosakoi Parade?
If you are new here, Yosakoi is a high-energy Japanese dance form that originated in Kochi Prefecture in 1954. It is fast, colourful, and incredibly fun to watch. Dancers carry naruko, traditional wooden clappers that fill the street with a distinctive rhythmic clatter, while performing elaborately choreographed routines in stunning costumes.
What makes Penang's version special is the fusion. Since the parade first launched in 2013 with just three teams, Malaysian dancers have been blending local culture, music, and storytelling into their Yosakoi performances. The result is something you genuinely cannot find anywhere else in the world. Japanese tradition filtered through the creative soul of Penang.
Thirteen years on, the event draws over 1,000 parade participants and an estimated 10,000 spectators every year. And in 2026, it is taking its biggest leap yet.

This Year's Big News: Festival Inspirasi Jepun
Here is what is new and why you should be excited.
Festival Inspirasi Jepun is a celebration of everything in Penang that has been inspired by Japan, and there is a lot to celebrate. Over 100 Japanese companies operate in Penang, and around 3,500 Japanese expatriates call this city home. The Malaysia-Japan connection here runs deep, and this festival is its most vivid public expression yet.
Across two venues and two full days, here is what is happening.
Day 1: Saturday, 27 June at Esplanade, George Town

The Yosakoi Parade and National Championship
The main event. Teams from across Malaysia compete on both street and stage, battling it out on synchronisation, creativity, costume design, energy, and team spirit. The National Yosakoi Championship moves indoors to Penang Town Hall this year, giving competitors a proper dedicated stage, while the Esplanade remains the heart of the parade action.
Workshops will run throughout the day too, so if you have ever wanted to try Yosakoi for yourself, this is your chance.
Glanz International Makes Its Penang Debut
Glanz International is a joint Malaysia-Japan Yosakoi team made up of 20 Japanese and 30 Malaysian dancers, performing together on the Esplanade for the very first time. This team has danced at the Kochi Yosakoi Festival in Japan, the spiritual home of the art form. Watching 50 dancers from two countries move as one is going to be a standout moment of the whole weekend.

Blue Santa Ambassador Programme Launch
2026 brings something brand new, the official Malaysian launch of the Blue Santa Ambassador Programme. Blue Santas are volunteers who wear distinctive blue Santa hats while collecting rubbish and educating the public on proper waste disposal. The programme started in Japan in 2016 and is now making its Malaysian debut right here at the Esplanade.
The Malaysian version has its own twist. Blue Santa Ambassadors here will be registered volunteers who can organise clean-ups anywhere, anytime, well beyond just event nights. Every piece of rubbish collected gets logged through a dedicated app, feeding into real marine conservation data collected by CEMACS.
Day 2: Sunday, 28 June at Penang Town Hall

World Cosplay Summit Malaysia, Asia Invitational Exhibition Showcase at 12PM
A world first. The World Cosplay Summit Malaysia, Asia Invitational Exhibition Showcase is the first curated international cosplay showcase of its kind anywhere on the planet. Invited former national representatives from Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, all WCS country finals alumni, will take the stage at Penang Town Hall for 5 to 10 high-quality performances demonstrating professional standards in cosplay performance, storytelling, and technical execution.

Cucu Cosplay Runway Competition
The Cucu Cosplay Runway Competition opens the floor to the wider cosplay community, a great entry point for anyone who loves the culture and wants to get involved or simply enjoy the show.

Virtual Idol Charity Concert
Closing out the festival on Sunday evening, the Virtual Idol Charity Concert brings digital performance art to a live audience, a nod to one of the most exciting and fast-growing corners of Japanese pop culture.

Before the Big Weekend: Events to Watch Out For
27 April 2026 — Blue Santa Ambassador registration officially launches with a press conference in Penang.
15 to 17 May 2026 — Amazing Japan Expo at Gurney Plaza, running alongside the Miss Yosakoi Penang 2026 preliminaries on 15 and 16 May, and Grand Finals on 17 May.
Miss Yosakoi Penang 2026 is open to single ladies aged 15 to 30. New this year is the Kimono Queen 2026 category, open to married women and anyone ineligible for Miss Yosakoi, a welcome expansion that brings more women into the celebration.

Good Food for a Good Cause
Running through the festival is the CPS Light Street Charity Food Bazaar, organised by the Children's Protection Society. Stalls will line Lebuh Light, and every ringgit spent goes directly to CPS. Pre-sold coupons will be available in advance, so grab some before you go.
